International Language Week

As part of International Language week our class thought it would be a great idea to do a mufti day where everyone can come dressed up in their own cultural clothes.

Before we did this, we wanted to know what culture means.  So we researched what culture means and we found out it is like the same as identity.  So a culture is a way of living that you identify with.

Then we made a notice to go home that said everyone can come to school in mufti that shows their culture.

Miss Fortes described our mufti day was like this.. "It was a spectacular day, full of colour, warmth and aroha.  Showing whanaungatanga and how we can be kaitiaki of our cultures".

Hockey with Barry

Waikowhai Intermediate have been very nice and let us use their hockey turf to practice on.  Firstly Miss Fortes showed us how to hold a hockey stick safely.  Then we all walked next door.

When we got there our coach showed us how to hold a hockey stick properly.  You grab the top of the stick with your left hand.  Then hold it a bit down the bottom with your right hand.  You can use your left hand to turn the stick and your right hand to guide it.

Term 3 Sports

Netball
This term our focus for P.E (physical education) is invasive games.  O'Neill class are very excited about starting netball next week and we are very lucky to have our own coach for the next 4 weeks. Thanks #SportAuckland.   Our lessons will run on a Monday:  9.30am - 10.10am.

Hockey
Every Tuesday morning we will walk next door (Waikowhai Intermediate) to learn new hockey skills with coach Barry.  These lessons will run Tuesday: 9.00am- 9-40am.  So we need to make sure we arrive at school on time.

Parents and families are more than welcome to come along and watch us learn some fundamental skills that we can use in these sports.

Huia Beach

Today we went to Huia beach.  We were able to be kaitiakitanga and look after this beach by cleaning it up. I think there are already some kaitiaki in the community because the beach was very clean.  Here are some pictures of our day at the beach.  Check out the waves!

Today was our last lesson with our Soccer coach Courtney.  We have had so much fun learning different skills that we can use to play soccer.  We learned how to juggle the ball on our feet and knees, how to strike the ball with our 'instep' and how to tackle someone to try and take possession of the ball.

Soccer is an invasive sport, so we realised that it helps to communicate with your team mates and pass the ball to each other

Welcoming Parents

We have been practising the waiata 'Haere Mai' in preparation for welcoming parents/families and friend to Hay Park School.  We performed this waiata to our parents during the opening of our Sculpture walk.  The girls sang beautifully with the boys supporting them with a brief haka which was led by Cassius and Spencer.  Ka rawe O'Neill class.
